3 Ways To Know When To Say No (If You Want Your Business To Grow)
Jun 29, 2026
“I'm addicted to saying yes. I'll just say that out loud.” ~ Kim White
There’s a moment on every entrepreneurial adventure where saying yes stops being a good thing.
At first, yes feels like growth: more clients, more opportunities, more momentum.
But somewhere along the way, yes starts to feel heavy. Your calendar fills up, your energy drops, and the very thing you built for freedom starts asking for more than you can give.
If your business is starting to feel like it owns you instead of the other way around, this is your sign to slow down and assess how you’re navigating all that growth.
“Check yourself before you wreck yourself.” ~ Kim White
Here are three habits to work on so you can navigate growth wisely and be ready with a confident ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

Recognizing Your Boom Gate Moments
A boom gate moment is like that moment on the road, you see a boom gate coming down, and you know you need to slow down so you don’t get in a terrible crash.
In business, you need to recognize when those boom gates are coming down for you, too.
If you’re not aware of the boom gates coming down, you won’t realize the danger ahead.
Entrepreneurs are so good at ignoring those boom gate moments and continuing to race ahead with all those projects, meetings, more, more, more.
“Why are you doing that, and what do you need to put in place so that you are not having those moments?” ~ Kim White
Boom gate moments are the time to embrace the n-o word.
When you recognize your own boom gate moments, you can say no to the things that aren’t good for you or your business.

Checking Your Capacity
“Sexy businesses protect our capacity. They protect us from ourselves.” ~ Kim White
If you're offered a new opportunity, you need to check you have enough capacity first.
These are three questions to ask yourself to see if you really do have the capacity to take on more in your business.
- Do you actually have time for this opportunity?
- What will break if you add this one more thing to your life?
- What can you remove to make space for this opportunity? (Because sometimes it is the right fit, but you have to let go of something in order to do it.)
And you will have so many opportunities presented to you along the entrepreneurial adventure.
It’s easy to feel like you have to take an opportunity if it comes your way. If you want to grow, you MUST do this thing.
“But it's not the only time in our life we're ever gonna have this opportunity. Most of the time, it will circle back around.” ~ Kim White

Saying An Intentional YES or NO
“We’ve gotta take the martyr robe off. We don't recognize a lot of times when we're too busy that we're playing the martyr. There doesn't even need to be a martyr.” ~ Kim White
Sometimes saying ‘yes’ just becomes a habit. And it’s based on a belief that if you don’t step in, everything will fall apart.
Have you ever convinced yourself it’s fine to lose sleep, to stretch a little thinner, to just make it work one more time—but that pattern adds up.
“A lot of those yeses come from what we call false obligation.” ~ Jill Olish
But when you slow down and really ask the question—am I actually responsible for this?— and the answer is usually ‘no’.
That’s why intentional space between the ask and the answer matters so much.
“We never say yes the same day as an opportunity comes up. We check against our bucket and boom gates first.” ~ Kim White
Creating that buffer—whether it’s stepping away from your calendar or simply giving yourself time to think—protects you from emotional, in-the-moment decisions.
“Because the reality is that sometimes you will make people mad when you’re saying no.” ~ Kim White
But a thoughtful ‘no’ that protects your time and energy will always serve your business better than a reactive ‘yes’ that costs you more than you can afford.

Saying yes is the underlying condition that these three habits try to address:
- You have to recognize your boom gates because you've said yes so many times.
- You have to be aware of your capacity because you want to say yes all of the time.
- And because you are so used to saying yes all of the time, you need to practice saying no.
“Because growth isn’t always about just doing more—it’s about choosing better.” ~ Kim White
