How To Avoid Burning Out As An Entrepreneurial ‘Yes’ Person
Jun 08, 2026
Are you a YES person?
It’s so easy to be a YES person when you’re an entrepreneur.
That’s because every YES you say has the potential to become a new client, more money, a wider network, or an extra product to sell.
But can you ever have so much success that it starts to wreck your life? The answer is also yes, unfortunately.
“I realized I had watched the sunset and the sunrise. I was the one at the office all the time. I was the one doing so much of the work, and I was killing myself.” ~ Kim White
Every ‘yes person’ on the entrepreneurial adventure needs to embrace the simple boom gate if you want to have the right kind of success.
When you understand the role of boom gates, how they work in business, and the importance of boom gate moments - you can build a business that you own, and that doesn’t own you (even as a “yes” person).

What is a Boom Gate
Think about when you’re driving your car, and you see a boom gate coming down just ahead of you, it’s really important to stop.
Those boom gates signal danger.
If you see a boom gate coming down and you ignore it and drive straight through it, there’s a good chance you’ll be in a terrible car wreck!
In the moment, a boom gate can be a frustrating inconvenience. So you need to keep their purpose in perspective.
Boom gates are good. They prevent car wrecks. They save lives. Boom gates keep you and your loved ones safe on the road.
Next time you’re stopped at a real boom gate, look around your car and breathe a sigh of relief. Be grateful that everyone in your car is safe and sound, exactly where they should be.

Boom Gates In Business
Did you know that boom gates also keep you and your loved ones safe in business?
The entrepreneurial journey is an incredible one, but it does include very real dangers for your health (mental and physical) and your relationships.
You need to be aware of where your business is impacting you and your loved ones, and to see those signs as boom gates coming down within your business.
Have you noticed any of these in your life:
- Your business is having a harmful impact on your relationships
- Work is taking up all the time in your day and on weekends
- You’re always exhausted
- You dread opening your laptop
- You’ve been avoiding your clients
- You’re snapping at people because you’re stressed out.
These are the boom gates of business.
And you need to recognize when those boom gates are coming down for you because they are signs that you (and your loved ones) might be headed for a terrible crash.

The Boom Gate Moment
“There was a moment where life and my body and my business started screaming: Stop! Something has to change!” ~ Kim White
It all comes down to the boom gate moment.
It’s that moment you recognize the danger: that something in your business is harming your life, health, or relationships.
That’s an important moment because it involves a choice.
Option 1: You ignore the boom gate because it’s very inconvenient to kill your momentum. You race through, and keep on doing what you’ve been doing in your business.
But know this - a huge wreck might be on the horizon, where you pay the price with your health and family relationships.
Option 2: You stop because you know the boom gate is there to help you. You choose to protect your health, and your relationships. Something in your business might need to pay the price, but you keep yourself and your loved ones safe.
Who are you going to choose in your next boom gate moment? Your business or your life?
And remember, a wrecked business can be easily rebuilt in time. But it’s much harder when your health and relationships are the ones that are wrecked.
So it can still be a “yes” moment, you’re just changing who you’re saying yes to.

Boom gates are your friend as an entrepreneur.
So say “yes” when the next boom gate asks you to stop. It could save your life.
Say yes to the life you actually want to build. And remember: a business is meant to support your life, not the other way around.
