What Exactly Is A Sexy Business? (And 4 Steps To Building One)

“It's a humorous thing to share why the name of this business is what it is.  Most people laugh when they hear ‘sexy.’ They think we're some kind of midnight escort service or something. And it's totally not that.” ~ Kim White

So what is a sexy business?

A sexy business isn’t glitz-and-glamour-entrepreneurship, a business where you act like you’re living the highlights reel, and only show off the good parts.

And it also isn’t the opposite: entrepreneurs living in the hustle culture, or grinding through extreme hours.

A sexy business is a business that's simple enough to run on a bad day and profitable enough to give you options in life.

Most importantly, it’s flexible enough to bend around your actual life - kids, sickness, aging parents, grief, joy, and every relationship in between.

“We’re human first, and when you don't allow for being human, you are putting shackles on yourself. A lot of businesses really have a choke hold on you, and that's not sexy.” ~ Kim White

So how do you know if the business you're building — or the one you already have — qualifies as ‘sexy’? You run it through the sexy business lens.

Think of these questions as glasses you put on before making any business decision. Every offer, every task, every "should I do this" moment gets held up against these four questions…

1. Time: Does It Steal or Protect Your Time?

“You can make more money, but you cannot make more time.” ~ Kim White

That's why the time questions comes first.

Before adding anything to your business - a new platform or tool that everyone else is using - ask whether it actually protects your time and makes you more efficient, or quietly steals it.

New entrepreneurs especially fall into the trap of thinking they have to do what everyone else is doing. But the truth is that you don't.

If a task isn't necessary and it's eating your hours, then it's not sexy. No matter what social media says, or how effective it looks on paper.

2. Money: Does It Generate Revenue, or Just Look Impressive?

Is what you’re doing making you money? Or does it just look like it’s making you money?

It's easy to build something that looks glamorous. Posting only the vacation photos. Curating a highlight reel that says to the world: "money is flowing here."

But a sexy business asks the hard question: is this actually generating revenue, or am I just performing?

A sexy business isn't about the appearance of profit - it's about making a real profit.

And a sexy business always shows both sides: yes, the business is making money, and here's what it actually took to get there.

“Because truthfully, there's a cost to everything we do.” ~ Kim White

3. Energy (Bandwidth): Does It Drain or Nourish You?

Every business has tasks nobody loves. That's not the issue. The issue is when something drains you consistently with no relief in sight.

If a task is nourishing, keep it. If it's draining, ask: can I delegate this? Is there a partner or system that handles it better?

Building a sexy business isn't about eliminating hard work; it's about finding the better way instead of white-knuckling through the same drain forever.

“That's what you're looking for when you're looking for sexy, is there's a better way.” ~ Kim White

4. Relationships: Does It Cost You the People Who Matter?

"
You don't wanna build a business and get to the end of your life
and have none of the people that you felt were important in your life there.” ~ Kim White

This is the one that sneaks up on people. You can build a wildly successful business, but lose the relationships that actually matter — because you don’t protect them along the way.

If the business is thriving but you don't know your own kids anymore, or you've lost touch with your spouse, family, or friends while chasing the spotlight, that's not a sexy business.

It might be a profitable one. It might even be an impressive one.

But a sexy business is defined by what you actually want your life to look like - and for most people, that includes the people they love.

So put on your ‘sexy’ glasses and start running your business (and life) through the lens of these four questions.

You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your time, integrity, energy, or relationships just to call your business a success.

If it steals more than it protects, it's time to redesign it - because a business that costs you your life was never sexy to begin with.
