Is Your Focus Face Sending The Wrong Message?
Oct 12, 2026
If you’re a business owner, there’s a good chance you spend a lot of time thinking hard.
Strategizing. Problem‑solving. Listening deeply.
On the inside, your brain is fully engaged.
On the outside, your face might look:
-
Serious
-
Intense
-
Distracted
-
Even a little unfriendly
That’s what I call your focus face.
And while focus face is completely natural, it can send messages you never meant to send.
What Is Focus Face?
Focus face is the expression you unconsciously make when you’re deeply concentrating.
You’re not angry.
You’re not checked out.
You’re not judging.
You’re simply:
-
Processing information
-
Holding lots of pieces in your mind
-
Trying to solve something important
But the people around you don’t see the activity in your brain.
They see the expression on your face.
And they make up a story about what it means.
How Focus Face Gets Misread
Here are a few stories people might tell themselves when they see your focus face:
-
“She’s upset with me.”
-
“He doesn’t like my idea.”
-
“She’s bored.”
-
“He’s checked out and not listening.”
None of those may be true.
But if that’s how they feel, it still affects:
-
Trust
-
Honesty
-
Willingness to share ideas
-
Confidence in front of you
This shows up a lot in:
1. Team meetings
You’re thinking about multiple things at once.
Your team sees a blank or stern expression and assumes, “I did something wrong” or “This isn’t good enough.”
2. Coaching or client calls
You’re listening deeply…
but your client may see your focus face and think, “She’s disappointed,” or “He’s judging me.”
3. Sales conversations
You’re working out the best way to help.
They see seriousness and interpret it as disapproval or lack of interest.
4. Video and content creation
When you read notes or plan your next sentence, your face can go flat.
On camera, that can feel cold or disconnected.
Why This Matters In Business
In business, people respond not just to what you say, but to:
-
How safe they feel with you
-
How seen they feel by you
-
How confident you seem in them
If your focus face regularly tells the wrong story, you may:
-
Shut down ideas you actually want to encourage
-
Make clients more self‑conscious when you want them to open up
-
Slow your team’s willingness to take risks or be honest
-
Create unnecessary distance in relationships that matter
The good news:
You don’t have to become fake or “on” all the time.
You just need a little more awareness and intentionality.
Simple Ways To Soften Your Focus Face
Here are a few small shifts that make a big difference:
1. Name it out loud
Give people a peek behind the curtain.
Try saying:
-
“If I look serious, this is just my thinking face. I’m really listening.”
-
“If my face gets intense, it’s because I’m trying to help solve this with you.”
That one sentence can relax the entire room.
2. Add micro check‑ins
While you’re concentrating, sprinkle in clear signals that you’re with them:
-
Nodding
-
Saying “I’m with you,” or “Keep going”
-
Briefly reflecting back: “So what I’m hearing is…”
These small cues tell them:
“I’m engaged, not disengaged.”
3. Reset your expression on purpose
When you catch yourself deep in focus face, gently soften:
-
Relax your brow
-
Unclench your jaw
-
Add a small, genuine smile
You don’t have to hold it like a mask.
Just let your outside catch up to what you actually feel inside.
4. Use your eyes intentionally
Simple eye contact, combined with a warm or curious expression, sends a powerful message:
-
“You have my attention.”
-
“I’m here with you, not against you.”
A Tiny Experiment For This Week
Pick one meeting or call on your calendar this week.
Decide ahead of time to:
-
Acknowledge your focus face at the start.
-
“If I look extra serious, that’s me thinking hard for us.”
-
-
Add at least two engagement cues during the conversation.
-
A nod, a “keep going,” or a brief summary of what you heard.
-
-
Notice how people respond.
-
Do they open up more?
-
Do you feel more connected?
-
You might be surprised by how much changes with such a small amount of extra intention.
Your focus is one of your greatest assets as an entrepreneur.
Let your face help people feel that strength and care,
instead of accidentally making them feel small, judged, or alone.
A little awareness around your focus face can turn quiet misunderstandings into deeper trust.
And that’s a very sexy way to show up in your business.
