Focusing on the Real Priorities

Are You Focusing On Your Priorities? 5 Signs - Image of a Compass

Entrepreneurs are some of the busiest people on the planet.

Calendars packed.
Messages stacking up.
Always “on.”

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:

You can be very busy and still not be working on what actually matters.

That’s what I call majoring on the minors.

What It Really Means To Focus On The Real Priorities

Focusing on the real priorities means putting your time, energy, and attention on the few things that truly move the needle, instead of getting lost in:

  • Distractions

  • Busywork

  • Other people’s urgencies

It’s the practice of regularly stepping back to ask:

“What actually matters most right now?”

And then aligning your schedule, decisions, and actions with those answers.

Not someday.
Not when things “slow down.”
Right now.

That often requires saying no to good, interesting, even fun things…
so you can say yes to the essential ones.

How You Know You’re Majoring On The Minors

Most of us don’t realize we’re doing it.

Here are a few signs:

  • Your days are full, but the big projects that would truly change things never seem to move

  • You respond to everyone else’s messages before you touch your own priorities

  • You feel “productive” but your revenue, audience, or impact hasn’t shifted much

  • You’re always prepping, tweaking, organizing… but rarely publishing, launching, or selling

  • You end the week exhausted and can’t clearly name the 1–2 meaningful wins

That’s majoring on the minors.

You’re pouring premium energy into low‑impact work.

Why The Minors Feel So Safe

If the minors don’t really move the needle, why do we lean on them?

Because they feel:

  • Familiar

  • Controllable

  • Less risky

Checking email, fixing small details, updating docs, rearranging tasks… it all feels like you’re handling business.

Real priorities, on the other hand, often feel:

  • Vulnerable (sharing your message, raising your prices, making offers)

  • Exposed (showing up on video or on stage)

  • Uncertain (building something new, launching, hiring, pruning)

So our brain quietly chooses “busy and safe” over “focused and scary.”

But only one of those choices will build the business you actually want.

What Focusing On Real Priorities Looks Like

Focusing on the real priorities is not about doing more.

It’s about choosing better.

It looks like:

  • Putting your most important work in your calendar first, not last

  • Blocking focused time where notifications, messages, and demands don’t get to interrupt

  • Asking, “If I could only get one thing done today, what would actually matter?”

  • Letting some tasks be “nice if they happen” instead of “must do today”

  • Being willing to disappoint other people’s expectations to honor your calling

You start designing days around your mission, not around everyone else’s emergencies.

A Simple Reset You Can Do This Week

If you’re realizing you’ve been majoring on the minors, here’s a simple reset:

  1. Name your real priorities.
Write down the top 1–3 things that would truly move your business forward in the next 30 days.

    • Launching or improving an offer

    • Creating a system that saves you time every week

    • Showing up consistently with content that builds trust

  2. Price your time accordingly.
Ask yourself, “If my time today was worth $1,000 an hour, would I spend it on this?”
If the answer is no, that task might belong lower on the list.

  3. Schedule the essentials first.
Block specific times on your calendar for those top priorities.
Treat those blocks like appointments with your most important client.

  4. Protect that time.
    Turn off notifications.
    Close the tabs.
Let some calls or messages wait.

  5. Let something minor slide.
    This is important.
Pick one small, non‑urgent task and consciously let it wait.
You’ll start building the muscle of choosing what matters over what’s screaming.

A Question To Carry With You

As you move through your week, keep asking:

“Am I majoring on the minors right now…
or am I actually focused on what matters most?”

Your answer to that question, moment by moment, is quietly shaping your entire business.

Because your life and your business are made out of what you give your best energy to.

If you don’t choose your real priorities on purpose, the minors will choose you by default.

And you deserve better than that.

If this hit home for you, share it with another entrepreneur who’s working hard but not seeing the progress they want. Sometimes the problem isn’t effort. It’s focus.

Your business gets a lot more powerful (and yes, a lot sexier) when your calendar finally matches your calling.
