3 Simple Ways For Entrepreneurs To Build Courage
Jun 02, 2025
“I think courage is a major part of being a business owner. You have to have courage to get into the arena of doing business.” Kim White
If you don't have the courage to try something, test something, or practice something new, you're not going to have success in your business.
But the question is: how do you do all these things without being afraid?
You do it afraid. That’s courage.
Having courage is hard. But it’s a lot easier when you have the cheat sheet, which in this case is from a movie.
“I literally built an entire business based on my all-time favorite movie: A Knight’s Tale.” Kim White
Here are 3 lessons on courage from that movie that transfer perfectly to running a business as a courageous entrepreneur.
Courage Lesson 1: Choose Your Walk On Song
“We believe in having walk-on songs.” Kim White
Having a walk-on song builds courage when you are nervous about going on stage, doing a recording, or presenting a workshop.
It’s a song that means something to you and is associated with confidence and accomplishment. It’s an energy-boosting song. It’s a song that puts you in the zone to succeed.
Challenge #1 is to choose your own walk-on song that gets you a little pumped before your big moment.
Courage Lesson 2: “I’ve waited my whole life for this moment.”
The second lesson is one in perspective.
This direct quote from A Knight’s Tale should give you the courage to give your fears the boot, and embrace whatever new thing is intimidating you.
“I’ve waited my whole life for this moment.” A Knight’s Tale
What have you waited your whole to do? Write that book, start this business, be a mother, record a podcast? There is a reason for what we do, it's not random. Business owners are intentional.
“That's what a calling is - waiting your whole life to do something.” Jill Olish
Challenge #2 is to ponder this question: What have you been waiting your whole life to do? And is it something that’s completely within reach? Or are you already living in the moment that you have been waiting your whole life for?
Knowing that you are living out your calling is a huge courage builder. So slow down, give yourself that reminder, and watch your courage increase.
Courage Lesson 3: “Guts I Have. Technique I Can Learn.”
That quote has a direct relation to the entrepreneur adventure. Entrepreneurs are gutsy people. You need to have guts to start something new.
When you combine guts with knowledge, that gives substance to your courage. You can feel confidently gutsy because you know you’ve worked hard to learn something new.
It is always possible to learn new things. No matter how old you are, or how complex the new skill is.
“I have said for most of my life I wasn't smart enough to know I couldn't do something, so I did it. Now it's too late. You can't tell me I can't." Kim White
Challenge #3 is to identify the skill or technique you need to learn.
Ask yourself: What are you already being gutsy or courageous about, but you need to learn something to help you do it?
Figuring out how to build courage is key.
“It takes a lot to go ahead and do something, especially if it's the first time. First time things are terrifying.” Jill Olish
But when you’ve slowed down to get the right perspective, you’ve taken time to learn the skill, and you’ve chosen your amazing walk-in song, you can feel your courage start to build up inside of you.
