3 Clear Signs Hustle Culture Is Sabotaging Your Life
Jun 15, 2026
What’s one word that sums up the life of an entrepreneur? Hustle!
But is that even good?
Hustle culture sometimes disguises itself as ambition or discipline.
But beneath the surface, it can be the very thing that’s sabotaging your business growth and the life you’re working so hard to build.
“Hustling for more in your business can end up hurting you, your health, or your family in some way.”
~ Jill Olish
Here are 3 signs that hustle culture is sabotaging your business (and even worse, your life).

1. You’re Doing It All
The first sign that hustle culture is hurting you is when you’re trying to do more than what’s humanly possible.
“Having started my entrepreneurial adventure at the same time as becoming a mom, I lost an income. And our family lost an income, and I thought I had to replace that income on top of being a mom. I tried to pile everything into a day. My relationship suffered. I was going through postpartum depression and anxiety, and that was enhancing it.” ~ Jill Olish
Hustle culture glorifies doing it all, but it rarely acknowledges the emotional and mental toll that comes with it because you are a human being.
Pushing past your limits doesn’t make you more successful; it takes you to your breaking point. It often leaves you more vulnerable.
“There is a cost associated with hustle culture.” ~ Jill Olish
If you stop for long enough to look at the cost, you’d realize it’s far higher than you’re willing to pay.
So check in with yourself. Are you trying to do it all? Have you forgotten you are a human being. And where is it leaving you? Is this really the life you want to build?

2. You’re Distracted From What Really Matters
The second sign that hustle culture is sabotaging your life is a result of the first sign. And it’s a lot more noticeable.
When your health and family life begin to take a hit.
“I was staying up till all hours of the night. My health was taking a toll. I would often tell my boys: No. I showed up to their functions, but that's not the same as being present with them. I feel like, looking back, I missed my boys.” ~ Kim White
Being physically present isn’t the same as being emotionally available, and hustle culture has a way of convincing you that showing up halfway is enough. It’s not.
The irony is that your business might be growing. But when it starts costing you your well-being and your presence at home, it’s no longer growth—it’s depletion.
“That year is a regret for me because I thought we had to keep going and we had to keep growing, and we had to do more to keep what we had. And the reality was it was the opposite. I was destroying things by not slowing down and becoming aware.” ~ Kim White
So take a moment to stop now and check for the signs.
- Are you getting enough sleep, or are you really hustling till late into the night and getting up early and doing it again?
- Are you causing yourself to be stressed out all the time because you think you need to drive a certain kind of car, laptop, or phone?
- Are you doing all this for your family, but at the same time, neglecting them?
“Ask yourself: Is my family going to suffer if we live in a hundred thousand dollar house instead of a million dollar house? Is my family gonna suffer if we have chicken instead of filet mignon?” ~ Kim White
If your health and your family are taking a hit, it’s time to reconsider how hard you’re hustling.

3. You’re Driven By Perception Not Purpose
“Are you doing things to show other people you're successful?” ~ Kim White
The pressure to look successful is what keeps the hustle culture thriving in your life and business.
And it’s the third sign that it’s sabotaging your life: you’re motivated by the ‘more’.
“Hustle culture is always about more.” ~ Kim White
And that constant chase for “more” can feel normal, even necessary, on the entrepreneurial adventure.
“When you're chasing vanity numbers, you always need one more sale, one more dollar, one more social media post, one more view. It's an endless loop that keeps you running without ever arriving.” ~ Kim White
But when your decisions are driven more by perception than by purpose, you risk building a business that looks good on the outside but is sabotaging your life on the inside.
Have you forgotten the value of what your business does and who you do it for? It might be time to step away from the ‘more’ and get back to your ‘why’.

You might be able to grow a business through hustle culture - but it will be an ugly business: a business that owns you and sabotages your life.
Hustle culture can’t build the life you’re after.
“The hustle is a dance, not a lifestyle.” ~ Kim White
A sustainable, “sexy” business isn’t built on exhaustion and constant striving. It’s built on keeping your life priorities front and center.
When you remember that you’re a human, and why you’re doing what you’re doing.
That’s how you build a business that supports the kind of life you really want to live.
