Where Dreams Go When You Keep Waiting

Nov 05, 2026

There is a dream inside you that keeps tapping you on the shoulder.

Maybe it is quiet now.

Maybe you have pushed it down so many times that it no longer feels urgent.

Maybe you have gotten very good at explaining why now is not the right time.

You are busy.

You have responsibilities.

You do not have the money.

You do not have the confidence.

You do not have the support.

You do not have the proof that it will work.

So you tell yourself, “Someday.”

Someday I will write the book.

Someday I will start the business.

Someday I will get healthy.

Someday I will leave the job that is draining me.

Someday I will say yes to the life I keep imagining.

And someday feels safe, does it not?

It asks nothing of you today.

It lets you keep the dream without risking disappointment.

It lets you feel like you have not quit, even though you are not moving.

But here is the truth.

Someday is not a plan.

Someday is a dream thief wearing a friendly face.

It does not kick down the door and steal everything at once.

It is much quieter than that.

It whispers, “Not yet.”

Then it whispers it again tomorrow.

And again next week.

And again next year.

Until one day you look up and realize the dream did not disappear.

You buried it.

Dream thieves do not always look like enemies

When we think of dream thieves, we often think of other people.

The person who laughs when you share your idea.

The person who says, “Who do you think you are?”

The person who reminds you of every reason it might not work.

The person who means well but keeps handing you fear disguised as advice.

Yes, those people can be dream thieves.

But they are not the only ones.

Sometimes the dream thief is your own excuse.

Sometimes it is the story you keep repeating because it lets you stay comfortable.

“I am too old.”

“I am too young.”

“I missed my chance.”

“I do not know enough.”

“I need more time.”

“I need to feel ready.”

“I need everyone to understand first.”

No, you do not.

You do not need everyone to understand.

You do not need a standing ovation before you begin.

You do not need perfect timing.

You do not need a flawless plan.

You need to stop handing your dream over to every fear that knocks.

Because fear will knock.

Doubt will knock.

Criticism will knock.

Your past will knock.

But you get to decide what comes in and sits at the table.

Excuses are expensive

Excuses feel free in the moment.

They cost nothing today.

They let you avoid the awkward first step, the messy beginning, the possible failure, the uncomfortable conversation.

But excuses collect interest.

The longer you wait, the more they cost.

They cost you momentum.

They cost you confidence.

They cost you opportunities you never saw because you never moved far enough to meet them.

They cost you the version of yourself who was waiting on the other side of that first brave decision.

Waiting can look responsible.

Waiting can look practical.

Waiting can look wise.

And sometimes, yes, there is wisdom in preparation.

But there is a difference between preparation and hiding.

You know the difference.

Your body knows.

Your spirit knows.

That little pull in your chest knows.

If you are honest, you can feel when you are being patient and when you are just afraid.

And listen, fear does not make you weak.

Fear means you are standing near something that matters.

The goal is not to become fearless.

The goal is to stop letting fear drive.

The cost of waiting is still a cost

We like to talk about the risk of starting.

What if it fails?

What if people judge me?

What if I lose money?

What if I am not good at it?

Those are real questions.

But we do not ask the other questions enough.

What if waiting costs more?

What if staying where you are is the bigger risk?

What if the life you are protecting is the very life you are outgrowing?

What if the dream you keep postponing is connected to someone else’s breakthrough?

Your courage is not only about you.

Your obedience to that nudge may open a door for your family.

Your story may give someone else permission.

Your business may solve a problem for people who are praying for the very thing you have been too scared to start.

Your book may sit on the shelf of someone who needs your exact words on their hardest day.

Your healing may become a roadmap.

Your tiny beginning may become someone else’s proof that change is possible.

So yes, waiting has a cost.

And sometimes the receipt shows up years later as regret.

The richest place on earth

I once heard it said that the richest place on earth is not a bank.

It is not a mansion.

It is not a vault filled with gold.

The richest place on earth is the graveyard.

Because buried there are books that were never written.

Songs that were never sung.

Businesses that were never started.

Ideas that were never shared.

Dreams that were never acted on.

Callings that were talked out of existence.

Gifts that stayed hidden because someone was waiting to feel ready.

That image stops me every time.

Not because it is dramatic.

Because it is true.

There are dreams that never die loudly.

They die quietly.

Under excuses.

Under people-pleasing.

Under “someday.”

Under the belief that there will always be more time.

But time is not something we own.

It is something we are given.

And the way we honor it is not by rushing.

It is by moving.

One tiny step counts

Here is the good news.

You do not have to change your whole life by Friday.

You do not have to quit everything, sell everything, launch everything, fix everything, and become a brand-new person overnight.

That is not how dreams come alive.

Dreams come alive through movement.

Small movement.

Honest movement.

Consistent movement.

One phone call.

One page written.

One walk around the block.

One message sent.

One class researched.

One boundary spoken.

One savings account opened.

One prayer whispered.

One conversation scheduled.

One decision made.

Tiny steps are not tiny when they break the pattern of staying stuck.

A tiny step tells your dream, “I still believe in you.”

A tiny step tells fear, “You can come with me, but you cannot stop me.”

A tiny step tells your future, “I am on my way.”

Do not despise small beginnings.

Small beginnings are where confidence is built.

Small beginnings are where clarity shows up.

Small beginnings are where you prove to yourself that you are not powerless.

You may not know the whole path yet.

Good.

You do not need the whole path.

You need the next step.

Do not let someday steal today

If your dream has been sitting on the shelf, this is your gentle wake-up call.

Not a shame spiral.

Not a panic button.

A wake-up call.

You are still here.

You still have breath.

You still have choice.

You still have something in you that is worth listening to.

So stop waiting for perfect.

Stop waiting for fearless.

Stop waiting for everyone to clap.

Stop waiting for a guarantee.

Take one tiny step.

Today.

Not because you have it all figured out.

Because you are done letting the dream thieves win.

Because excuses are too expensive.

Because someday has taken enough.

Because the cost of waiting is real.

Because your dream was not placed in you so it could be buried with you.

It was placed in you to be lived.

Start small.

Start messy.

Start scared.

But start.
